Historic England is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It is the government’s statutory adviser and a statutory consultee on all aspects of the historic environment. This includes archaeology (both on land and under water), historic buildings, sites and areas, designated landscapes and the historic elements of the wider landscape. Its aim is to secure the preservation and enhancement of the heritage of England for the benefit of future generations by preserving and listing heritage assets such as building, ancient monuments, gardens, landscapes and battlefields and by advising central and local government.
